Summer of Hope: Margaret’s Story

Managing Expense on a Fixed Budget with Support from LCOC’s Food Pantries

On the Lower Cape, where the cost of living seems to rise by the day, many older adults face difficult choices each month. For Margaret, a lifelong resident of the community, those choices had become increasingly difficult.

Living on a fixed income from her Social Security benefits, Margaret carefully budgets every dollar. After covering her rent, utilities, and medications, there is little left for essentials like groceries. “You do the math over and over,” she says, “but it doesn’t change.”

This year, through a referral from the Council on Aging, Margaret was introduced to the newly renovated food pantry at the Lower Cape Outreach Council’s main office. What she discovered there was more than just the food – it was community and a reliable source of support during a time of growing financial strain.

Each visit helps stretch her limited budget a bit further. Fresh produce, pantry staples, and occasional personal care items allow Margaret to maintain her healthy diet without sacrificing other necessities. Just as important, the pantry provides dependability and dignity – values that matter deeply to those navigating financial hardship later in life.

“The pantry makes it possible for me manage all of my other expenses,” Margaret shared. “Without it, I don’t know how I would manage.”
Margaret’s story reflects a broader reality across the Lower Cape – seniors are working harder than ever to remain independent and risings costs are making it more difficult for them to remain here though their retirement years.

Thankfully, the LCOC food pantries continue to meet this growing need and ensures that neighbors like Margaret have access to nutritious food and compassionate support.
