Summer of Hope: Matt & Emily’s Story

LCOC Provided a Solution for Housing Instability

Summer on the Lower Cape is a season of energy and opportunity – but for many working families, it also brings heightened housing instability. For Matt and Emily, that reality had become all too familiar after years of moving from one seasonal rental to another.

Matt, a landscaper, works long hours throughout the summer months maintaining properties across the Lower Cape. Despite his steady employment and Emily’s seasonal work at a popular restaurant, the nature of the housing market made it increasingly difficult to secure a stable home. Each year, as short-term rentals surged and prices climbed, their family faced the uncertainty of their next move.

Seeking stability for their two young children, Matt and Emily worked tirelessly to locate an appropriate year-round rental. The joy of finding a stable home quickly dissolved when they calculated the cost to move in. By scraping together all their available funds, the family only had half of the funds needed to move in. To secure the balance, they were referred to the Lower Cape Outreach Council by their children’s elementary school nurse.

A conversation with one of the agency’s financial assistance advocates quickly developed into a comprehensive plan. The LCOC team worked closely with their partners to gather resources and Matt and Emily were amazed with how quickly the necessary financial support came together. “We were just stunned that they were able to pull together so much so fast in support of our family,” Emily said.

The family of four is now in a safe, stable, year-round home of their own – ending years of uncertainty tied to the seasonal housing cycle. For the first time, Matt and Emily can focus not on where they will live next, but on building a future for their children in a supportive community.

“We are so grateful for the support from LCOC. Without their help, I am not sure that we would have survived another season.”
