Compassionate Community Assistance Helps Mother and Daughter Strive for Self-Reliance
For Maria and her daughter Elena, the support they received from the Lower Cape Outreach Council came at a critical moment for their family. As they worked toward building a more stable future together, rising expenses began to place increasing pressure on their household budget despite both women’s hard work and determination.
Maria has worked in healthcare on the Lower Cape for decades, most recently as a visiting nurse She takes pride in the care and support that she provides to patients in her community. Long shifts and demanding hours are a regular part of her work, but like so many other hard-working single parents, she has struggled to keep pace with the rising cost of living. During the winter months, increasing utility costs created a financial burden that threatened the family’s ability to stay current on essential household expenses.
At the same time, Elena was pursuing her education as a full-time college student while balancing part-time work whenever her schedule allowed. Dedicated to completing her degree and creating new opportunities for herself and her family, Elena remained focused on her studies even as tuition costs became increasingly difficult to manage.
Through LCOC’s assistance programs, Maria received support to help cover overdue utility expenses, while Elena received tuition assistance that allowed her to continue her education without interruption. Together, the assistance eased significant financial stress and helped the family regain stability during a challenging period.
“We’ve both worked so hard to move forward, and there were moments when it felt overwhelming,” Maria shared. “LCOC’s assistance reminded us that we don’t have to face these challenges alone.”
