Gifts of Hope: Sharon’s Story

Sharon Finds Balance and Community on the Cape

Sharon has been living on a fixed income on the Lower Cape for almost a decade, when a chronic condition forced her into early retirement. But as grocery, housing, and utility prices climbed, her monthly check was stretched thinner each month. After paying rent, medications, and heating costs, there was often little left for food.

“I used to walk past the fresh produce at the market and just keep going,” she said. “It felt like something extra—something I couldn’t afford anymore.”

A friend from church told her about the Lower Cape Outreach Council (LCOC) – a local nonprofit that helps seniors, families, and individuals to meet their basic needs. The agency operates a network of food pantries across the eight Lower and Outer Cape towns. Sharon experienced a profound sense of relief when she walked through the doors and found exactly what she was looking for—an array of fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, eggs, healthy proteins, and pantry necessities.

“I was overwhelmed by the amount and quality of the groceries,” Sharon said. “But what really gave me a sense of relief was knowing that I no longer had to choose between paying my bills and eating well.”

Sharon now visits the pantry nearly every week. “There are weeks where I only need a handful of items, but I’ve come to appreciate the LCOC staff and volunteers so much. They treat me with such respect and understanding, it’s just so wonderful.” Sharon also met a group of other retirees from her affordable housing development who regularly attend the pantry together. “We all support each other,” Sharon said. “That support has helped her build a sense of community, maintain her independence and health, and ease the stress of a tight budget.”

For Sharon, and so many other Lower and Outer Cape residents, the combination of compassion and community that they receive from LCOC makes all the difference, especially during this frightening time for vulnerable residents in need, struggling to remain in a place they call home.
