Gifts of Hope: Peter’s Story

Struggling Father Finds Dignity for Him and His Children

Cape Cod winters can be long, cold, and windy. Too many of our neighbors face these conditions without the necessary gear. While there are options for acquiring donated or used coats, the Lower Cape Outreach Council believes in the value of providing brand new, unworn jackets that fit. This valuable service is offered with our nonprofit partners at Operation Warm.

This year, LCOC will distribute nearly 500 new coats to children and families in need, from Provincetown to Harwich. These garments, purchased at half the commercial rate, provide more than warmth and protection from the wet, cold winter. They also instill confidence and hope in the grateful children and adults who receive them.

One recipient, Peter, a struggling Outer Cape fisherman, said that as a child he always received hand-me-downs from his four older brothers and didn’t get his first new coat until he was an adult. Now, with children of his own, Peter is thrilled that his children don’t have the same experience. “I feel so grateful that my kids can access these news coats because I remember what it was like to always get worn out clothes. Sometimes, I was embarrassed. My kids don’t have to experience that, which is a true gift.”
