Thanksgiving Gratitude & Hope
Thanksgiving has always been a special holiday for Janet and her family. Some of her earliest memories are of large family gatherings at her grandparents’ home to celebrate together. Unfortunately, Janet’s husband recently passed, and a string of unexpected challenges followed, making it difficult for her to continue those special family traditions.
Now living on a modest fixed income that only covers the essentials, Janet has little left for the holidays.
“The thought of paying for everything my family needs for Thanksgiving is so overwhelming, but I want my grandkids to have the same experience I had as a kid,” Janet shares. “I just couldn’t imagine how I was going to pay for a big turkey and all of the veggies I need to make my traditional meal.”
Janet’s situation is not unlike many others on the Lower and Outer Cape as too many of our neighbors are feeling pressured to scale back to make ends meet. Lower Cape Outreach Council (LCOC) is proud to help these families celebrate without sacrificing their important traditions. “The help I receive from LCOC is so valuable, allowing me to continue creating beautiful memories with my family.”
Janet is just one of nearly 700 families who will receive their Thanksgiving meal from LCOC at no charge. The meal package—complete with a turkey, traditional sides, and fresh produce—is packed by a team of LCOC volunteers and distributed to households in need from Harwich to Provincetown. This program ensures families have everything they need for a plentiful and memorable Thanksgiving meal.
Reports show that one in five households in Barnstable County are food insecure. Help us to make sure that no families go without … this Thanksgiving Day and the whole year through.
