Summer of Hope: Mary’s Story

LCOC Supports Daughter Caring for Ailing Parents

Mary and her family have been utilizing the Lower Cape Outreach Council food pantry in their town for nearly five years. Initially, the food they received was a perfect supplement to their fixed income. The family situation changed when both of Mary’s parents became ill, making her their primary caregiver. Between hospital visits, transportation costs, bills, and the overall rising cost of living, the financial challenges became too much to manage without help.

Mary continued to attend the pantry and, after confiding in the pantry manager about the severity of their situation, she was connected with a financial assistance advocate at Lower Cape Outreach Council. In addition to assisting with the unpaid utility bills, Mary’s advocate connected her with other local resources to help stabilize the situation. “I never realized how much support there is in our community until I really needed it,” Mary said. “We were desperate for help and Lower Cape Outreach was our support system during the most difficult times.”

Sadly, Mary’s mother passed away recently, and her father is still struggling with his ailments. The family is grateful for the continued support of Lower Cape Outreach, especially the food pantry, which they continue to utilize weekly. “The food that we get is so helpful, but we also appreciate the kindness of the volunteers, who always ask about dad and share memories of mom. I’ll never forget how supportive everyone has been during such a difficult period in my life.”
