A Lifeline for Jim and Margaret
For nearly fifty years, Jim and Margaret have called their little cottage in Wellfleet home. They built their life here—raising children, volunteering, and enjoying the peaceful calm of a Cape Cod winter. But in retirement, living on a fixed income during uncertain economic times, even simple pleasures have become harder to afford.
When Jim needed an emergency medical procedure last winter, the bills arrived faster than their savings could cover. Between prescription costs, co-pays, and physical therapy, the couple found themselves falling behind. The unpaid invoices began to pile up.
“We’ve always managed on our own,” Margaret said softly. “But this time, it just got away from us.”
The Council on Aging outreach team helped connect them to the Lower Cape Outreach Council, an Orleans-based nonprofit dedicated to helping Lower and Outer Cape residents through unexpected financial strain. Within days, Jim and Margaret organized their expenses and worked with an LCOC advocate to secure the necessary assistance. By working with their network of partners, LCOC managed to find funding for three-quarters of the outstanding balance and arranged a payment plan for the remaining amount.
The relief was immediate. “We could finally breathe again,” John said. “They went beyond solving the problem of the mounting expenses, they helped us plan for our future in this expensive town.”
The couple was connected to their local LCOC food pantry where they now get more than half of their monthly groceries. “We’ve even been able to rebuild some of the savings that we lost when Jim got sick.”
Today, Jim and Margaret are back on their feet, sharing their experience with neighbors and friends. “We want people to know that anyone, at any time, can find themselves in need of help. If they just reach out, Lower Cape Outreach will be there to take their hand.”
In 2025, LCOC assisted more than 5,000 Lower and Outer Cape residents facing challenging times and circumstances. We thank our donors and volunteers for making this happen and wish you all a Happy and Healthy 2026!
