Summer of Hope: Robbie’s Story

Local Single Parent Manages Summer Cost Increases by Reaching Out to LCOC

As a full-time DPW employee and single father living on the Outer Cape, Robbie knows the value of his job and the reliable income that it provides for his family. He is grateful for his position but also feels the impact of a cost-of-living that is rising much faster than his wages. He does everything he can to cut costs, including utilizing the nearest Lower Cape Outreach Council food pantry. Most of the year he is able to make ends meet. The challenge comes in the summer when the cost of childcare adds a bill that he simply cannot afford.

Robbie mentioned his struggle to an LCOC volunteer while picking out groceries at the pantry. To his relief, the agency was able to work together with their partners in the community to cover nearly three quarters of the bill for Robbie’s two boys. “I have to work every hour that I can just to keep the lights on and the roof over our head.” Robbie said. “When these extra bills for the boys’ camp costs arrive each summer, it’s a real scramble.” “Having LCOC cover such a significant part of the summer bill was a tremendous help,” Robbie said. With his boys now enrolled in camps and activities, Robbie can focus on working to support the family’s basic needs. “It’s a relief to know that I can focus on my responsibilities as a parent.”

Robbie was incredibly grateful for the support of LCOC and hopes that others in the community will follow his example and reach out in times of need. “It’s really tough for everyone right now, so it’s nice to know that Lower Cape Outreach is there when you need them.”

In 2024, LCOC supplied 1,647 vouchers to local households to provide childcare services so family members could work and earn income. This is all thanks to the generosity of our donors!
