Summer of Hope: Aaron’s Story

Lower Cape Outreach Helps Longtime Shellfisherman Change Course

Aaron – a lifelong resident of the Outer Cape – spent most of his adult life working on his family’s oyster grant. After nearly four decades of back-breaking work, his body was giving out. Aaron knew he needed to consider other career options. While shellfishing was his profession, Aaron’s passion has always been his art. He believed that this might be his last opportunity to turn that passion into a newfound vocation. In making the transition, he was worried about falling behind on bills and not having the funds necessary to create and show his creations.

Having previously worked with the Lower Cape Outreach Council (LCOC) for assistance during COVID, Aaron knew of the services that the agency provided, so he reached out for more guidance. “Asking for help is never easy, especially at my age,” said Aaron, “but sometimes you just need a helping hand to get through a tight spot.” LCOC staff and volunteers met with Aaron to review his situation and helped him develop a plan to support his career move.

“I had a plan, but LCOC helped me execute it. I walked out of the office feeling empowered and supported in making my big leap.” In addition to helping Aaron manage a few small bills, LCOC assisted with some startup business costs. Aaron is now successfully displaying his artwork in various locations across the Cape this summer. The assistance rendered to Aaron is part of the agency’s renewed effort to support residents on their journey to self-sufficiency.
