Relief from Summer Heat Made Possible by New AC Unit Provided by LCOC
With the heat of summer upon us, Nina panicked when her 83-year mother’s air conditioning broke. Her mother has major respiratory ailments made worse by the heat. The thought of her enduring the summer heat without relief was frightening to Nina. To make matters worse, Nina’s mother’s apartment has special casement windows that cannot accommodate a standard air conditioning unit. Nina’s mother is also on a very fixed income that barely covers her needs; and Nina herself was already stretched thin financially. They didn’t know where the funds for a new AC unit would come from.
Thankfully, a neighbor had encountered a similar situation and gave Nina some advice: call the Lower Cape Outreach Council. Within days of reaching out, the Orleans-based nonprofit helped Nina find the replacement unit and paid to have it professionally installed in the casement windows. “I was just blown away by the support they offered,” Nina said. “They knew exactly how to handle the situation.”
Nina was comforted knowing that her mother was safe. “It’s really tough because it’s just me and mom here on the Cape, and I worry about her. It feels good to know that LCOC is here to support us and connect us to other services, including their food pantries.”
