Tackling Food Insecurity with Nutritious Foods from the LCOC’s Food Pantry
Jen walked into the Main Pantry at the Lower Cape Outreach Council for the first time this spring. The cost of groceries was putting such a strain on her budget that she needed to find a solution. Her daughter’s school counselor gave her information about the LCOC pantry, and, after some initial hesitancy, Jen decided to give it a chance. “I am so happy that I chose to go to the pantry,” Jen said, “I was amazed at the quality of the food that I received, and I loved that I was able to pick out the food myself.”
The Lower Cape Outreach Council has nine food pantries across the eight towns of the lower and outer cape. Part of the mission is to help lower and outer cape residents like Jen who are struggling with food insecurity. At the Orleans Main Pantry, Jen filled her bags with an array of fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs, healthy proteins, nuts, and some snacks for her daughter. “I received the same quality food that I would have gotten from the supermarket,” Jen said, “I just couldn’t believe how wonderful it all was.”
By trimming her monthly grocery bill, Jen’s budget was in much better shape, and she has been able to stay on top of her other expenses. Jen also learned about the agency’s financial assistance program. “I hope I never need it, but it’s so nice to know that it’s there if I do,” Jen said. LCOC supports the community through food pantries, a financial assistance program, Katy’s Korner – a free clothing resource, and several holiday programs.
Last year alone, food pantry visits increased 29% over 2023 visits.
