For many Cape Codders, this summer will be one of worry over food insecurity, scarcity of affordable year-round rentals, reliable transportation, and the looming back-to-school clothing costs for their children.
Despite working two jobs as a home health aide and a seasonal cleaner, “Elaine”—a single mother of twin five-year-old boys—is the epitome of that worry. She grew up on Cape Cod and is doing everything possible to remain here, close to family. And yet, the possibility of buying a home is out of reach, never mind what she will feed her family after paying her rent.
With donor support, the Lower Cape Outreach Council assists thousands of Lower and Outer Cape residents like Elaine and her family. Over the last year, LCOC distributed 46,635 bags of groceries to food-insecure households and awarded $842,589 in financial assistance to residents of every town we serve.
Donate today to help families like Elaine’s to remain living, working and thriving on Cape Cod.
Given current and impending governmental cuts in food assistance programs, the Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) estimates up to a 77% increase in demand at local food pantries in 2025. Adding to this troubling news, the food insecurity rate for Cape Cod jumped from 20% to 34% in just one year, according to a recent GBFB report.
As we launch our 2025 Summer of Hope Campaign, please help us to feed, shelter, and clothe those in immediate need.
If you or a neighbor on the Lower or Outer Cape need assistance, LCOC may be able to help. Contact us at 508-240-0694 or lcoc@lcoutreach.org.
